It’s been such a great summer! This summer, 14 youth and 6 adults traveled to Silsbee, TX where we helped those affected by Hurricane Harvey. It was a powerful week of mission and outreach as we got a firsthand look of the devastating effects hurricanes and water can have on homes. I am proud of our youth and our sponsors who worked hard installing sheetrock, completing yard work, and learning what it takes to put a house back together. We heard powerful survival stories of what it was like to be waiting on top of rooftops with no guarantee that there would be one last boat that went by. We participated in a Prayer walk and prayed for those affected by the hurricane, for the first responders, and for their families that also tow the front line at home. I say it often, but I wish this church could see our youth in action on these trips! I know that from afar, that it appears that they travel on these trips as some sort of fun vacation, and believe me, we do like to make them fun. However, I am so proud of the hard work, positive spirit, and diligence they put into completing their jobs with compassion, care and respect for all of God’s people. These youths did not let the high TX humidity dampen their spirits, even when many of them were forced to work in hot houses without air conditioning.
Also, I want to say how incredibly honored and thankful I am for our five other adults who gave up a portion of their summer and their vacation time, to travel with us for this journey! Tina Bledsoe, Christie Cunningham, Darren Falk, Julie Falk, and Lori Vande Velde did an amazing job of not only leading our youth by example, but by being capable and strong leaders that I could count on to share the load with. Thank you for sharing your gifts and your passion with the youth and for those we served in Texas. And lastly, thank you Silver Lake UMC for your prayers, your presence, your gifts and your service so that these youth could be the hands and feet for others. May you always know the power you have to be a positive role model in the lives of our young people. Thank you for buying our cookies and donuts, attending our youth dinners, and most importantly, praying and caring for our youth! We prayed for you on this journey and will continue to give thanks for all that you do for others. Thank you!
Be sure to be in worship on Sunday, August 19th when our Youth will lead service and talk about their summer of mission!
